Session 5 @ Avembsys:Introduction to Avionics

Welcome to one more session of SOAR ,this session was dedicated to Introduction of Avionics.
The session had an amazing detail of about requirements and criticality of the Avionics system. 


We were exposed basics of the avionics such as safety  mission etc.After a certain amount of exposure to these concepts we had an interaction about the projects with the trainee.


we had the following learning in the class,
Introduction to Avionics, 
 Avionics(Aviation Electronics) 
The requirements of the avionic system are,
1. Safety of flight.
2. Mission of the aircraft (must serve the purpose of the aircraft).
3. Life cycle cost / cost of ownership.
4. Certification (the system must be certified by the certifying authority such as FAA, DCA, CEMILAC etc).

Some of the aircraft's embedded systems are GPS, Military IFF (Identify Friend or Foe), Microwave Landing System(MLS), Weather Radar, Avionics bay, Marker beacon, Distance Marker Equipment (DME), ATC Transponder, TCAS, Radio Altimeter, Live TV(located at the vertical stabilizer gives the passengers the outside view of the aircraft during the flight.)

Aircraft Navigation:
1. Absolute Navigation System.
2. Dead Reckoning System
3. Mapping System.

Types of data:
1. Fresh and valid(this is only data that is correct and should be considered).
2. Fresh and invalid(could be due to the equipment error).
3. Stale and valid(equipment is not updating the values).
4. Stale and invalid(same as above)

Also we got to know the radio frequency to be used during the emergency 121.5 MHz. At this frequency one can ask for aircraft flying instructions in an emergency such as pilot is unconscious etc.

The seven modes of EGPWS are:

  1. Excessive descent rate ("PULL UP" "SINK RATE")
  2. Excessive terrain closure rate ("TERRAIN" "PULL UP")
  3. Altitude loss after take off or with a high power setting ("DON'T SINK")
  4. Unsafe terrain clearance ("TOO LOW - TERRAIN" "TOO LOW - GEAR" "TOO LOW - FLAPS")
  5. Excessive deviation below glideslope ("GLIDESLOPE")
  6. Excessively steep bank angle ("BANK ANGLE")
  7. Windshear protection ("WINDSHEAR")
