Session 3 @ SOAR by Avembsys : Basic aerodynamics

     The third most awaited session happened after a long break ,it had loads of stuff packed.
The subject matter  was mainly focused on aerodynamic basics,as we went through the basic factors influencing aerodynamics such as :
Viscosity,Pressure,Moment,Momentum and Couple.
In particular,
Pressure :force per unit area.
     pressure can be dynamic pressure ,static or stagnation pressure.
     Types of Pressure (based on altitudes): Pressure Altitude ,True or Sea Level Altitude,          Absolute Altitude.
We then learned about ,
Aerodynamics of a plane:
Involves the way in which the motion of plane in air is controlled.
The most important factor is the shape of its wings,ie. difference in the surface area of the wings upper and lower sides resulting in a lift.

Parts of a plane :
Cockpit -command and control
Turbine Engine -Generate thrust
Wing -generate lift
Fuselage -Carry payload

Apart from these there are other parts whose  sole purpose is the control of the aircraft motion.
They are as follows:
Winglet -decrease Drag
Slats -Increase Lift
Spoilers -Change Lift Drag ands roll
Aileron -change Roll
Flaps -Increase lift and Drag
Elevators -Change pitch
Horizontal and Vertical Stabilizers -Control Pitch and Yaw
Rudder -change yaw

The forces involved in the aerodynamics of a plane
Namely four forces:
Thrust ,Lift ,Drag and Weight .
The forces Drag and Weight are mainly due to Fluid (air) Viscosity and Gravity(plane mass)







From the figure it is evident that inorder for a flight to fly the forces thrust and lift should dominate over the other two.
Further the Thrust provides the force for lift ,ie. Lift of a plane is obtained only after a sufficient thrust is applied.

There are factors affecting the motion of a plane.They are :
Angle of attack
Lift Coefficent
Stalling
Attitude of Plane

The session Included Videos on Air France 296 flight crash.
The session dedicated some of the time for discussion on warfare technologies such as VTOLS / VSTOLS
and ECM(Electronic Counter Measures).
Last But not the least A briefing about the projects ,along with some industry standard practices of development such as V-Models were discussed.

With more and interesting things to come ,an awesome learning experience at SOAR.
